Review Al Merrick M23

The CI M23 is the new mid length from Channel Islands Surfboards. A surfboard not to be confused with the CI Mid. The Al Merrick M23 has more volume, fuller edges and a sleeker nose contour. If you are looking for a surfboard with great paddling power, to pump you up this summer to catch waves, the Al Merrick M23 is your board. One of Al Merrick’s favorite hybrid boards that he made for himself and has been surfing for decades.

What fins do we recommend for this Al Merrick board?

In stronger and bigger waves, in the 3 or 4 feet range, we recommend the use of trifin fins with a more stretched template, with more rake such as the FCS CI Up Right or Futures Alpha, as they offer more stability and control.

AL MERRICK MIDLENGTH TECHNICAL FEATURES

The CI M23 hybrid surfboard presents a unique combination of features, with a shape intermediate between a Mid Length board and a Shortboard.

• Rocker: The curved profile at the front of the board allows tighter turns and reduces the risk of the tip sinking into the water. On the other hand, the rocker at the back facilitates a top to bottom surfing style similar to shortboards.
• Rails:  Unlike the CI MID, this board features thicker edges. This feature considerably increases the board’s volume, allowing the board to be reduced in width at both the tail and tip without sacrificing paddling ability.
