CI Bobby Quad Channel Islands Surfboards

Bobby Martinez challenged us to build him the shortest surfboard possible in order to maximize his fun on the small wave days of summer in Santa Barbara, California. Bobby also added that it had to be a quad, and that it had to be up to his standards of other high performance surfboards. Bobby's short boards are 5'8 meters, but for this custom quad he thought it had to be lowered to 5'2 meters.

By shortening the rail line and distributing the volume in width along the shape of the plane, he would be able to skate on the sidewalls and carry enough speed to keep up with his power surfing.

TECHNICAL FEATURES BOBY QUAD AL MERRICK SURFBOARDS

The Bobby Quad has a low entry rocker that turns into a low glide surface on the gas pedal part of the board that provides the speed to get into the waves and over those flat sections.

The exit rocker and bottom contours are designed to be all bullet - with a performance oriented shape and a generous double concave for added lift to help Bobby get the line down in powerless waves. Its rocker profile in the tail, combined with some width in the modified tail, provides speed and grip on fast direction changes.

WHICH QUAD SURF FINS DO WE RECOMMEND FOR THIS BOARD?

When it comes to the fin system, we recommend quad fins. Available with Futures or FCS 2, and can be made in PU, Epoxy or Spine-Tek constructions.

WHAT SIZE DO WE RECOMMEND FOR THE BOBY QUAD?

The model is designed to be surfed 3" to 6" shorter and ¼" to 1/2" wider than your short board. For reference, Bobby's dimensions are 5'2 × 19 × 2 5/16. From other riders on the team we have learned that the Bobby Quad is versatile enough to be ridden by those who want to increase their wave count. The rail holds up very well, in fuller dimensions, so to maintain the integrity of the design, we recommend adding thickness rather than width to achieve your volume.
